Be a Buddy, Not a Bully!

Bulling Logo

At the Boys & Clubs of the Rogue Valley, we strive to give our Club Members a place where they belong. The month of October was National Anti-Bully Month and we used that opportunity to educate our Kids about the different types of bullying, how to recognize when it is happening and give them the steps to take when they see their peers getting bullied. One of the focuses of our youth development strategy is to give our Kids ownership of the Club and have them make it their own – this includes making sure that every child who walks through the door feel that they are wanted and that they belong.

The goal of our Anti Bully Campaign, taught by Randy Keith (Director of Programs), is to educate our Kids on the different types of bullying and to teach them the importance of standing up together when they see bullying happening. We also focus on understanding that every person is unique – just because someone is different doesn’t mean they are any less important than the next person. We encourage our kids to be confident in who they are and what they believe in.

Through the course of this class, we asked our Kids if they have ever been bullied in their life and the majority of them raised their hands. Bullying takes many forms – physical, verbal, cyber and social (exclusion) and can lead to lack of self esteem, depression and sometimes violence.

During the Campaign our Torch Club volunteered to develop and perform multiple skits our younger Kids that demonstrated how to recognize and remind them of the appropriate steps take if they see someone getting bullied. Their involvement is valuable because our young Club Members look up to them and look forward to the day when they get to pass on their knowledge as well.

After completing the class, each of our Club Members had the opportunity to sign an Anti-Bully Pledge. Our Staff Members, Board Members & Community Volunteers have also taken the pledge. Stop by the front desk at the Grants Pass Club to check out our pledge wall and join in and support our Anti Bully Campaign.
